Chemistry at D’Youville
Chemistry
is often referred to as the “central science”
because it provides a crucial link uniting the insights of
other scientific disciplines such as physics, biology, and
geology. But it is much more than that: it is also a
pathway to a deep understanding of the world around us, and
it demands of our intellects that we think about our world
in a precise and creative fashion. As a member of the
community of chemists, a truly international community, we
explore together the physical universe and try to fashion
it in the service of our fellow human beings. In so doing
we deepen our scientific appreciation of the world around
us, and we confront the human issues which attend upon our
scientific age.
The chemistry major at D’Youville thoroughly prepares
our students in the traditional foundational areas of
chemistry: inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and
biochemistry. But the structure of our major also provides
you with time to think, time to pursue your interests in
other fields where chemistry has an impact; not just the
other sciences, but also business, education, law, medicine
and the liberal arts.
Our flexible major requirements, as well as our small
classes and laboratory sections, in which we take so much
pride, will enable you to reflect upon yourself, and what
you are and what you want to be, to steer your life towards
your dreams, all in an atmosphere of support and personal
interaction with our dedicated and talented faculty.
