Transition Metals

One of the most striking aspects of transition metals is that they can have multiple oxidation states:

  • Fe2+, Fe3+
  • Sn2+, Sn4+
  • Cu+, Cu2+

They tend to form ionic compounds and some ions have characteristic colors in aqueous solution.

  • Fe2+ - light green
  • Fe3+ - gold
  • Cu2+ - blue
  • Ni2+ - green
  • Co2+ - pink
